Learn More About Our New Jersey Mental Health Treatment Center.
When someone has an addiction or mental health disorder, it is not uncommon to feel worry, shame, or concern about disclosing their challenges to others. Many within the Jewish community do not feel comfortable talking with loved ones or strangers about their need for help to overcome a substance use disorder. There are many reasons for this, but stigma and a historical misrepresentation of addiction and the Jewish faith may be the most significant contributors.
For many years, addiction and mental health struggles within the Jewish community has been cloaked in stigma. Although many partake in alcoholic beverages as part of rituals and religious holidays, one would be hard-pressed to find someone of the Jewish faith who would acknowledge personal challenges with addiction or that they knew anyone who had a problematic relationship with drugs or alcohol. Unfortunately, decades of denial have led to a wide variety of struggles for members of the Jewish community suffering from addiction.
The misconceptions surrounding addiction in the Jewish community have led to challenges in collecting accurate data on addiction and addiction treatment rates. Because faith suggests addiction is a moral failure or that addiction is not a problem for Jewish people, those who were asked about personal, family, or social experiences with substance abuse were likely to provide false responses. However, a study published in the Journal of Addiction shed light on addiction and mental health within the Jewish community.
Of those surveyed, more than 41% knew someone with a drug or alcohol problem, and 23% had a family history of substance abuse. Of those, 44% would look to a local community-based support group, while 3% noted they would not seek help personally or for a loved one with an addiction. Unfortunately, many Jewish people continue to view addiction as a moral failure rather than a disease that can be treated effectively.
Although traditional New Jersey inpatient rehab programs can and will provide the evidence-based addiction treatment care you need to get sober, they may lack many essential requirements to satisfy other specific needs. For example, some treatment programs may be unwilling or unable to provide kosher meals to meet dietary requirements. Still, others may not provide activities or religious services that cater to the Jewish faith. A Kosher rehab focuses treatment planning around your specific needs and goals as a member of the Jewish faith.
At our rehab, we develop our plans to meet your cultural, personal, and religious beliefs while caring for your physical health as you progress through treatment at Relevance Recovery. However, unlike traditional drug and alcohol rehab, our rehab provides for specific factors specific to your needs, including a kosher diet—we will work with you & your family to ensure you remain kosher.
Access to meals that meet your dietary requirements is a vital part of your daily routine and a significant contributor to your overall well-being. For those who adhere strictly to the Jewish faith, accessing and following a Kosher diet (regardless of whether you are at home or in a treatment program) is crucial for your spiritual health. Our program at Relevance Recovery understands the critical importance of Kosher meals, and our staff will help you maintain a Kosher dietary plan.
We aim to help you maintain your regular diet while in treatment and encourage you to bring in your own Kosher food options, including meats, vegetables, fruits, grains, breads, pasta, dairy products, snacks, desserts, coffee, tea, and other beverages. Our nutritional professionals understand it is undesirable (and sometimes physically impossible) to change your diet when entering treatment. When someone is accustomed (physically, psychologically, and spiritually) to specific foods, forcing them to change their diet while trying to heal from addiction and mental health issues can only lead to worsening medical and mental health challenges.
Engaging in peer-group activities is another essential component of successful, effective addiction treatment. It is not uncommon for those who seek help to overcome addiction to experience several challenges to their sobriety during treatment and after. One such challenge is isolation. For some, talking with others (including friends and loved ones) about their struggles is difficult if not impossible due to fear of what the other person may say or think.
Even if you are not practicing regularly, we believe engaging with others with similar backgrounds and goals for a substance-free future can help boost your success in treatment and help you maintain lasting recovery.
Statistics show that addiction and mental health rehab programs are most successful when the environment is supportive of the culture of the individual. For this reason, many rehabs have developed programs that cater to specific demographics.
Research indicates when like-minded peers surround you, you will feel more comfortable talking honestly about your relationship with drugs and alcohol. The more comfortable you are being open and honest about the challenges addiction has brought to your life, the more effective treatment will be.
At Relevance Recovery, we understand seeking help is especially challenging as a member of the orthodox Jewish faith.
