Addiction, Mental Health and the LGBTQ Community

When you are ready, it is essential you feel comfortable seeking potentially life-saving treatment in an environment where they feel comfortable and supported. Treatment programs that focus on LGBTQ-friendly therapeutic models are proven to be the most effective. Research has shown that specialized treatment plans lead to improved treatment outcomes over programs that do not specialize in LGBTQ treatment.

Many studies focus on the impacts of addiction on specific demographics. Recently, a wider body of research has focused on the effects of addiction within the LGBTQ community. These studies suggest that those who identify as LGBTQ experience higher rates of drug and alcohol abuse as compared to heterosexuals. Many who identify as LGBTQ experience higher stress levels, discrimination, and other challenges specific to community members. In general, these circumstances are not as commonly experienced by heterosexual individuals but are considered a key reason why LGBTQ individuals may hesitate to seek help.

Additionally, elevated stress levels may increase one’s risk of developing an addiction as people (regardless of sexual identity or preference) frequently turn to drugs or alcohol to manage emotional and physical challenges. This can, and often does, lead to dependency and addiction.

Statistics published after completing the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicate substance abuse rates and patterns are higher among sexual minority youth and LGBTQ adults. The 2018 survey showed that nearly 40% of the LGBTQ community used marijuana. Also, 9% reported abusing prescription pain killers or heroin, and more than 12% reported alcohol use disorders and alcohol addiction. This data shows a higher rate of substance abuse across all substances when compared to heterosexual adults (individuals over 18) who reported 10% (marijuana), 4% (opioids and heroin), and 10% (alcohol), respectively.

Unfortunately, data from the same survey indicates LGBTQ adolescents and teens are not immune from challenges related to drug and alcohol abuse. According to data released after the same nationwide study, up to 30% of LGBTQ youth under age eighteen have the symptoms of at least one substance use disorder. Again, compared to heterosexual youth of the same age category who reported 9% SUD rates, it is clear that LGBTQ youth face an uphill batter when getting the help they need to address addiction risk.

Another survey of the LGBTQ community conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) indicates that diagnosed substance use disorders are more than twice as prevalent among members of the LGBTQ community who do seek help with their addiction. Also, someone who identifies as LGBTQ is more likely to have a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis condition. Co-occurring diagnoses or dual diagnosis conditions occur when one experiences symptoms of both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition simultaneously.

What to expect

What Does an LGBTQ Rehab Center Entail?

In recent years, the level of effort focused on reducing stigma and stigmatizing behaviors toward the LGBTQ community has increased dramatically. Although significant progress has occurred, there is, unfortunately, a long way to go before members of the LGBTQ community feel safe and supported as they begin their journey to overcome addiction. Because stigma and other behaviors are still a problem, the stressors that lead LGBTQ youth and adults to start experimenting with or using drugs and alcohol continue to be a significant and complex part of their daily lives.

Because of these ongoing issues, members of the LGBTQ community are more likely to actively avoid seeking treatment at an addiction treatment center without a specialty program due to fear of how non-specialized treatment may impact their psychological and spiritual well-being. At an LGBTQ residential treatment program in New Jersey, you can expect compassionate, skilled, and evidence-based treatment programs that focus on your needs as you begin treatment. At a specialized New Jersey outpatient rehab like Relevance Recovery, treatment programs focus on the needs of LGBTQ community members, increasing your opportunity for improved treatment outcomes.

Understanding, compassion, and care

Benefits of Attending a Mental Health and Drug Rehab Program Catered to the LGBTQ Community

When choosing a rehab to begin your journey towards sobriety, it is essential to find an environment where you feel comfortable, safe and supported. For members of the LGBTQ community, finding an environment that offers all of the above as part of an evidence-based, comprehensive treatment program can be challenging. However, the most significant opportunities for success come with finding a rehab center where medical and mental health practitioners specialize in LGBTQ care. Feeling safe and understood as you take the first steps on your therapeutic journey is vital to achieving the best outcomes.

LGBTQ residential treatment at an LGBTQ drug, alcohol and mental health rehab helps enhance positive treatment outcomes by ensuring that programs and therapy models address your specific treatment needs and goals. Treatment providers can utilize simple changes or alterations to a traditional addiction treatment program to produce a greater sense of comfort and safety in the inpatient (residential) treatment environment.

Examples of program modifications may include housing options that ensure transgender patients are housed with their gender identity. It is also essential to ensure all members of the treatment community (including medical and mental health providers) are trained to address the potential treatment differences, which could vastly improve treatment outcomes for LGBTQ patients.

At our LGBTQ rehab in New Jersey, our caring and compassionate treatment team members realize that each person who chooses Relevance Recovery, regardless of sexual or gender identity, has unique needs surrounding their treatment needs and planning. We will work with you to ensure each component of your treatment plan at our LGBTQ-supported treatment plan addresses critical factors in the treatment environment, such as safety and comfort. We understand that offering uniquely designed, individualized treatment plans that address your emotional, physical and spiritual needs is vital to enhancing your recovery journey and overall treatment experience.

Relevance Recovery's Compassionate LGBTQ Treatment Center

As previously noted, addiction and mental health issues are things that each person experiences in unique ways. The challenges they go through while actively using and the difficulties faced when they begin detox are all specific to the addict. For this reason, a successful treatment program works directly with each of its patients to design a treatment program based on their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. The best treatment centers will work with their patients and tailor plans based on their specific addiction and treatment goals.

When you identify as LGBTQ, finding a program with experience treating those within the LGBTQ community is essential. Our LGBTQ rehab center considers the needs of each patient at the holistic level. We understand many factors contribute to addiction challenges and that each person seeking sobriety is more than a diagnosis. We will work with you to ensure each treatment model and the overall environment at our LGBTQ rehab center in New Jersey allows you to focus on healing and overcoming addiction rather than the worry or fear associated with seeking help.
